 What if the tax remitted by you is not populated in the Tax return?

The author is not a tax-expert and no technical advice is being offered here. Just sharing an information that can come handy for some (who know….it could be for many!) 

31st July is the last day to file the tax returns for individuals and certain business entities. 

Almost five crore returns have been posted till date and several crores may be filing on the last day.

Even if Infosys (technology partner for Tax returns) delivers a robust service, small technical glitches are not ruled out.

The most common problem one might encounter is when the Tax form does not automatically populate the self assessment tax remitted by you along with the tax return. With several lakhs opting to pay taxes in the last one or two days as Self-assessment tax, the system will choke. Though your bank account might show a debit, it is not enough to complete the tax return as the Tax Challan number is a critical input in the Tax return.

You won’t be able to retrieve the challan number from the bank as the challan is generation by the Tax portal and not by the bank. You could resort to the following:

Step 1: Login in to your Tax portal inputting the login credentials

Step 2: Go to your dashboard

Step 3:  Click Tax Deposit . It will give you details of tax deposits you have made under self-assessment tax and advance tax

Step 4: Now that you know that the Self assessment tax has reached the coffers of the IT department, click e-file under the Dashboard

Step: 5   You will notice three tabs. Click the third  tab that reads “Payment history”

Step: 6 Click the three dots menu (circled above) under Action.  

Step 7: You will given the option to download the challan which will carry all the relevant details
