Thiruvakkarai  - திருவக்கரை 

People in this part of the world will readily recollect Vakrakaliamman Temple than  the actual name of the temple which  is  Vadivambiga Samedha  Chandramouliswarar temple . A temple sung in praise the Saivite Great Thirugnana Sambandhar  (Padal Petra Sthalam), this temple is more popular for the VakraKali Amman. 

In reality it is a Religious Supermarket that the temple houses the shrines of Lord Shiva, Goddess Vadivambiga, Kaliamman and MahaVishnu. In addition, the temple houses the Jeeva Samadhi of Kundalini Rishi.

The seven tiered Rajagopuram is very elegant and is a little tucked in from the main road.  A huge temple complex awaits you once you turn in to a small street from the main road.

Legend has it that this region was in the grip of "Vakrasuran" who Lord Shiva wanted to be killed by Lord Vishnu. When Vishnu deputed his chakra to kill the Asura, every drop of blood that came out became an Asura and Vishnu was not able to kill him. At this point Lord Shiva asked Parvathidevi to take the form of Kali and consume all the blood that has come out. Once this was done, Vishnu killed Vakrasura with his Chakra.

Thus the temple has distinct Shrines from Shiva, Kali, Parvathi, Vishnu and others. 

The Moolavar incorporates Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma and has three faces. Shiva has a moustache which is not normal in this part of the world for a LingaMoorthy. 

Vakrakaliamman is in a mandapam at the entrace and devotees throng the shrine on festive occasions.  She has an infant as her ear-hanging at this temple.

Lord Vishnu has a separate large shrine and has Chakra in an active form, ready to be thrown at someone (Asura in this case)

This temple has some special features (Vakra - deviation for normalcy)

• Nandi, Balipeetam and Dwajasthambam are not in a line and at an awkward angle from the Lord. Normally they are in a perfect straight line.
• Vishnu Faces west 
• Crow the Vahana of Sanaischara is in the opposite direction
• Hanuman and Garuda are in wrong sides
• Kali temple is never inside a village; would be outside the village and far from the temple; but here Kali is the first shrine in the temple and at the entrance of the temple complex. 

 Tirugnana Sambandar, a 7th-century Tamil Saivite poet, venerated Chandramowleeswarar in ten verses in Tevaram, compiled as the First Tirumurai. Appar, a contemporary of Sambandar, also venerated Chandramowleeswarar in 10 verses in Tevaram, compiled as the Fifth Tirumurai.

  பணைத்தோளியொர் பாகமதா

வாய்ந்தவன் முப்புரங்கள்

  எரிசெய்தவன் வக்கரையில்

தேய்ந்திள வெண்பிறைசேர்

  சடையானடி செப்புதுமே.  2 

சந்திர சேகரனே

  யருளாயென்று தண்விசும்பில்

இந்திர னும்முதலா

  இமையோர்கள் தொழுதிறைஞ்ச

அந்தர மூவெயிலும்

  அனலாய்விழ ஓரம்பினால்

மந்தர மேருவில்லா

  வளைத்தானிடம் வக்கரையே.  3 

நெய்யணி சூலமோடு

  நிறைவெண்மழு வும்மரவுங்

கையணி கொள்கையினான்

  கனல்மேவிய ஆடலினான்

மெய்யணி வெண்பொடியான்

  விரிகோவண ஆடையின்மேல்

மையணி மாமிடற்றான்

  உறையும்மிடம் வக்கரையே.  4 

ஏனவெண் கொம்பினொடும்

  இளவாமையும் பூண்டுகந்து

கூனிள வெண்பிறையுங்

  குளிர்மத்தமுஞ் சூடிநல்ல

மானன மென்விழியா

  ளொடும்வக்கரை மேவியவன்

தானவர் முப்புரங்கள்

  எரிசெய்த தலைமகனே.  5 

கார்மலி கொன்றையோடுங்

  கதிர்மத்தமும் வாளரவும்

நீர்மலி யுஞ்சடைமேல்

  நிரம்பாமதி சூடிநல்ல

வார்மலி மென்முலையா

  ளொடும்வக்கரை மேவியவன்

பார்மலி வெண்டலையிற்

  பலிகொண்டுழல் பான்மையனே.  6 

கானண வும்மறிமான்

  ஒருகையதோர் கைமழுவாள்

தேனண வுங்குழலாள்

  உமைசேர்திரு மேனியினான்

வானண வும்பொழில்சூழ்

  திருவக்கரை மேவியவன்

ஊனண வுந்தலையிற்

  பலிகொண்டுழல் உத்தமனே.  7 

இலங்கையர் மன்னனாகி

  எழில்பெற்றஇ ராவணனைக்

கலங்கவொர் கால்விரலாற்

  கதிர்பொன்முடி பத்தலற

நலங்கெழு சிந்தையனாய்

  அருள்பெற்றலு நன்களித்த

வலங்கெழு மூவிலைவேல்

  உடையானிடம் வக்கரையே.  8 

காமனை யீடழித்திட்

  டவன்காதலி சென்றிரப்பச்

சேமமே உன்றனக்கென்

  றருள்செய்தவன் தேவர்பிரான்

சாமவெண் டாமரைமேல்

  அயனுந்தர ணியளந்த

வாமன னும்மறியா

  வகையானிடம் வக்கரையே.  9 

மூடிய சீவரத்தர்

  முதிர்பிண்டிய ரென்றிவர்கள்

தேடிய தேவர்தம்மா

  லிறைஞ்சப்படுந் தேவர்பிரான்

பாடிய நான்மறையன்

  பலிக்கென்றுபல் வீதிதோறும்

வாடிய வெண்டலைகொண்

  டுழல்வானிடம் வக்கரையே.  10 

தண்புன லும்மரவுஞ்

  சடைமேலுடை யான்பிறைதோய்

வண்பொழில் சூழ்ந்தழகார்

  இறைவன்னுறை வக்கரையைச்

சண்பையர் தந்தலைவன்

  தமிழ்ஞானசம் பந்தன்சொன்ன

பண்புனை பாடல்வல்லா

  ரவர்தம்வினை பற்றறுமே.

The temple has millions of devotees every year. The visit of Late Jayalalitha & her friend  contributed to the popularity of this temple.

With the phenomenal inflow of devotees one would expect that the temple has resources to maintain itself. Unfortunately not. The officers and Archakas of the temple are exploiting the situation to their  benefit at the cost of temple. 

Very very poor maintenace of such a beautiful and large temple complex. 

In a disgusting act, the Archakas are selling religious articles like Dollars, Yantras,  etc in front of the  the sanctum itself. This pattern is consistent throught the temple.

I pray Lord to drive some sense in to the brains of the officers and priests of this temple.
