Mayilam Balamurughan Temple
மயிலம் பாலமுருகன் கோவில்
Mayilam is one of the most popular Murughan temples closer to Chennai; other popular temples being Siruvapuri, Vallakottai, Kandhakottam (Kanchi) where Kandapuranam was written.
Located close to Tindivanam at a distance of 15kms, accessible both by state highway and Tollway, this is a picturesque village with greeneries on all sides. A hillock in the midst of lush green paddy fields is actually a surprise.
The temple is on a very tiny hill and is visible while travelling on the Villuppuram-Tindivanam Highway even from a distance of 20 kms, thanks to the tall Rajagopuram; for some reason the Rajagopuram is kept closed
After the defeat of Surpadma in the hands of Lord Subrahmanya, Surapadma prayed to lord that he be accepted as a Divine vehicle. Lord the every merciful blessed Surpadma to be his Vahana (peacock) and flag (Cock). It is at this village that Surpadma was granted the honour of becoming Lord's Vahana and hence the name Mayilam (which stands for Peacock in Tamil).
This temple is built and mainted by Bommaiyapuram Mutt (original name Brahmapuram to mean that the village was given as a gift to Brahmans ). There is another long legend associated with the life Sankhakannar, one of the Sivaganas of Kailas. Due to incurring displeasure to Lord Siva, he was cursed to be born as man in bhuloka and to get emancipation after due penance only.
There are several vintage temple in the vicinity of this temple town. If one has a vehicle and a day to spare, he can visit several phenomenal temples (including Thondai Nadu- Padal petra sthalams which are concentrated in this area). To name a few:
To reach the Mayilam temple you could either take the steps appromiating sixty and easy to climb OR use the car to go up and walk less than 30 steps.
This temple is a Thiruppugazh Sthalam. Arunagirinatha has sung in praise of Lord at this temple:

A temple beautifully constructed and in a serene location is a popular religious cum picnic choice amongst villagers in this area.
Temple is generally calm and quite with manageable crowd on a normal temple. Festive days can get crowd in tens of thousands and it may be worthwhile timing your trip suitably.
