Gneelivaneswarar Temple, Thirupaingneeli

Thirupaingneeli is a tough name to pronounce as well as spell, in Tamil, English or any other language.  Great places are associated with great names isn't it ?

One of the lesser known temples to people outside Trichy, this temple is however famous with many parents concerned about delay in their children's marriage.

Yes, this is a Kalatra Dosha Parihara Sthalam, which helps unmarried to be blessed with wedlock sooner.

One of the temples sung in praise by the Savite Greats Appar, Sundarar and Thirugnana Sambandar, this temple dates back to the 6th century and earlier, with regard to the Sanctum Sanctorum , even if the other structures were developed over a period of time.  Insciptions placed by Raja Raja Chola & Rajendra Chola are available, giving evidences on the vintage of the temple.

Swethagiri is one of the eight peaks of Mount Kailash which was thrown apart when Vayu blew the Sanda Marutham, an intense storm. Swethagiri is now called Thiruppaingneeli.

Presiding Lord Kathalivana Nathar (Gneelivana Nathar) is a Swayambhu moorthi.

The temple derives its name from Gneeli, meaning Banana.  Saptha Mathas or the Seven Kannikas workshipped at this place and they were granted to be in the shape of Banana trees at this Kshetra, and hence the name for the temple. This place was also called the  Forest of Kal Vazhai and consequently the village became Thirupaingneeli.

This temple is associated with the Rebirth of Yama as a child under the feat of Shiva at this temple (Lord Shiva could be seen in a rare Somaskanda form in Black granite in this temple as opposed to Panchaloka Somaskanda in other temples). In view of Rebirth of Yama at this shrine, this temple grants the devotees with Resurrection of lost career, success in litigation, debt-clearance and long life.

Saint Thirunavukkarasar was granted Lord's Darshan at this temple, besides Annam (rice). The lord who gave food to the saint is appropriately called Sottrudaya Easwarar.

Sage Vasishta had the opportunity to worship Lord at this temple in the form of Nataraja.

Many others worshipped Lord here including Rama before conquering Ravana.

The temple is well maintained. This being a Parihara sthalam there is a potential for exploitation by the priest and officers, but surprisingly it is  very subdued.

The temple office not only regulates Devotees coming here for pariharam, but also handles them in batches in an organised manner. The token system accompanied by distribution of pooja items for a very small price, deserves appreciation.

Raja Gopura is incomplete, and will come up when God wishes, but when it comes up it will be a huge tower. Temple compound walls (Prahara walls) are quite hefty, both tall and deep.

Despite being a popular parihara sthalams, the temple is well maintained.  Temple surroundings will take you to the eighties.

A beautiful temple that you should not miss in your life time.
