Who said Halloween is a Western idea and of Christian origin?
The popular belief is that Halloween has influences from Christian practices the earliest instance of following Halloween is from the 8th century AD.
Halloween celebration as we know it today is probably restricted to trick-or-treat and attending Halloween costume parties or carving pumpkins, lighting Bonfires etc
If I told you that Halloween’s equivalent has been practiced in India for a long long time well before the 8th century you should not be surprised

Have a look at the attached video from the movie Gramam, a master class depicting the Pre-independence era (1938) in the undivided Palakkad region where most of the people spoke Tamil in addition to Malayalam
In this video you can see a group of children going house after house in Palakkad asking people to contribute oil for the temple lamp.
Identical to the Halloween tradition these children want all those who do not contribute oil to the temple will have troubles.
